I know I know, it’s Tuesday…but this week I purposely waited because it is the end of the month! Meaning the end of the month recap!!
We had a great week last week over here at LDL Co., bringing in a total of 19 keepahs. For those that haven’t been watching the film, that’s the same number caught all of last June. We thought we had it good last week, but little did we know we were in for one hell of a last day of the month! For all you P&L managers, you should be asking your sales teams how they are performing for you right up until the last day!
As the saying goes “the cure for anything is saltwater, sweat, tears, or the sea,” and boy did Ben have the rainy June Blues today. I totes called him out before we left the dock BTDubbs!! But I tell you a bad day on the boat is better than a good day doing anything else, and we had a good day on the boat! His mood shifted like a PMS-ing lady, no offense to the females reading this (read my disclaimer in the rules if you have an issue)!
Today was overcast and muggy, not terrible considering the weather people called for thunderstorms and rain all day. Did we go before the rain, you ask? Of course not, as soon as we revved up the engine and set sail down the river.... downpour. But let me tell you, we take this bet seriously – for ALL of you – and we weathered the rain and fierce seas (OK not so fierce, totally calm!) like champs.
Side note: The old Liza B would have kept us pretty damn dry, and if the T-top company (Not naming names) could have gotten their shit together and had the top on the new one it may have helped…I digress, but just sayin’.
Any whose today's trip was definitely worth it! It turned into a record-breaking evening! It was like the lobster rain gods rewarded us for braving the elements, and rewarded we were! Not only did the “Liza B” post a new boat personal record of 21 Homarus Americanus (Latin for lobster) in one trip, but a new team record of 26 with “Murphy’s Claw” hauling in 5 of their own!!! Totally nutzo out there tonight! Every trap hauled had keepers in it. We even ran out of room in our buckets, they were flying all over the stern of the boat. It looks like the July bugs are here, and in a massive way!
This June we fished a total of 8 days and ended with a record setting month of 57 ocean bugs, compared to June 2019 with a whopping 19 womp womp womp (anyone second guessing their bets?!?!?!) The fishing is only going to get better as the “June blues” roll out and July heat waves take over (I have red rubber bands for July – cuz it’s a fire month). Last July we caught 109! With the experience that we now have and the addition of another 5 traps, I fully expect to surpass that number!
If the above isn’t enough excitement for you, get a load of these shenanigans. Last Saturday the crew was out checking traps and puttzing around when we noticed a 60ft lobster boat – F/V Amanda T of Portsmouth – helplessly floating down the river – for comparison we operate a 22ft vessel. She was dragging anchors and Captain Chris was running around the deck throwing lines and running back and forth between the radio and the deck to make sure she didn’t hit anything. The current was pretty fierce on Saturday and the Piscataqua is known to be one of the strongest currents east – tidal current of 4 knots. As we continued to close in, we watched as the Amanda T drifted under the bridge and ripped off her antenna; this boat requires the bridge to be raised which of course it was not. She was full MAYDAY CODE RED ALERT!!!! Until “the little Eastern that could” showed up and saved the day, not only for the Amanda T but also for a lot of boat owners parked at the Marina on Badgers Island. We were able to tie her stern line (back of boat) up to the bow (front of boat) of our boat and with some might and grit we were able to pull her away from the boats and closer to the middle of the river. You should have seen it (check it out on Instagram @littleduder)! Ironically enough the boat that was in the most danger was named “Perfect Timing,” ha go figure.
Special shoutout to Matt Junkin, First time lobster potter and lobster experience!
Also, Special shout out to Billy and Michelle Shouldice as they welcomed Little Little Billy "Charlie" Shouldice VI this week!!!!
On to July! Stay safe on the 4th although everything is basically canceled…I’m throwing a massive block party and lobster boil (masks required of course), everyone is welcome!
P.S. Wild Harbor Inshore Slam Starts tomorrow!!!! Can register all summer long!!! Catch em' up!
