We had a great week last week at LDL Co., I feel like this is becoming a habit (air high five!) Not only was it the 4th of July - one of my favorite holidays (patriotic, hanging out and drinking tons of beers with friends, grilling in big crowds, and FIREWORKS!!!) - but it was also a solid week of fishing. Funny though because all those other things I just listed are frowned upon, but we did it anyway!! Disclaimer....there isn't one so tough shit!
We started off the long weekend taking a journey down into COVID-infested Massachusetts (sorry I'm not sorry for all you Massholes - wear your damn masks) on Thursday morning (turned into afternoon, turns out I am not as great as I thought about directions and driving...seems I'm losing my touch) to collect a couple of friends and fellow potters (Tyler and Lindsay Caldwell - who escaped COVID infested LA, where beaches, restaurants and bars are now re-closed - that blows!) Don't worry I masked and gloved up and made sure they provided their negative test results before they got into the car!
Side note 1: Do not follow Waze into Boston, you'll end up going through side streets and back alleys of places you don't want to be - LD and I were trembling in fear! Somehow this quick little 1hr 40 min trip turned into a 3.5hr round trip of missed turns, near collisions, and stress!. Anywhose, as most of you know, Thursday's are Lobster days. So we refueled the crew with fresh lobster rolls - two styles, classic lobster salad and warm butter - and let Tyler get a little beauty rest in before we put them and the rest of the LDL crew to work!! Sidenote 2: After much deliberation and an attempt to not bore everyone or offend people more than I already do...the team has decided that if a fellow potter goes on the Lil Duder Lobster Excursion they need to provide a write up about their experience! This is not intended to feel like 7th grade English. There are no word minimums or guidelines and the grittier the better! BTDuuuubs I am also fair game.... Ben said I have thrown some darts in my last few posts and that payback is a bitch....but I'm still waiting!!
So, what did Tyler and Lindsay have to say about their experience?!: "As a rookie trap puller and all around amateur boats man, we got off to a slow start when I could not even put gas in the boat. However, despite fighting the elements of jet-lag, tardiness, forgetfulness, and amateurism, we were able to have an epic first day of “hauling.” Although I, Tyler, was the only one to pull 1 empty pot (2 of my 4 were empty) the haul was tremendously successful bringing up 18 buggahs in 15 pots. So of course we re-baited and set them back. As we approached the traps again on Saturday, I had a sense of comfort ability going out to check the traps. It also helped that a new rookie was on the boat that had 1 day less experience than I (Zack Thompson). With this newfound confidence my first haul brought up 4 keepahs! And naturally it would not be a trip for me without hauling a zero keepah pot on the next trap. The total haul was 19 more buggahs which made for an incredible 1st annual July 4th Lobster Boil.
What did I learn? I learned that a honey hole is only full of honey if you know how to get it out of the beehive. I learned that the best lobster trip is done with at least a 6 pack of beers each. I also learned Liza and The Duder are incredible hosts on and off the boat. Amazing trip. I learned that if you're reading this and part of the fish and game dept, I did not actually touch any pots or lobsters and the story you read has been fiction..." - Tyler Caldwell Side Note #3: I think we ate more lobster this past weekend than we have in a whole season, literally we had lobster every meal....lobster Benedict, lobsters bloody marys, lobster rolls, steamed lobster, lobster boil. Tyler and Lindsay totes get an "A" on the food game. By Sunday night we had so much random food in the fridge, Tyler scrapped up this amazing pasta dish that was a culmination of the different meals we ate over the weekend!
Boat Update: Boat was pulled Sunday night! The new "Liza B" has officially received its new decals! Monday morning I dropped it off for the T-top install! Hoping it will be back in the water Wednesday, looking like absolute FIYAH! Pics to come!
Lobster Update: Last week we caught a total of 63 (that includes Tuesday 6/30) That is a record for a week! YTD is 94 in just 3 weeks. Also a record! T-Shirt Update: Wahoo (not the fish)!!! Package has arrived! We will be getting the t-shirts out to the first pot guessers as promised and have more for sale (non for profit company, but not for T-shirts) at your request! Shout out Tyler Gilbert (fellow potter) for getting these taken care of.... next week's spotlight! This week's spotlight company is Winning Image Graphix!
