This post has taken me all damn day! Don't ask how or why! Anywhose....I know what you are all thinking...all I do all day is yap yap yap.
The Numbers:
September 2019 – 47 (10 traps)
September 2020 – 147 (15 traps)
YTD TOTAL: 602
The lobsters are back baby! After Hurricane Teddy moved on through last week and I was able to clean the seaweed out of my traps and get them all untangled we have lit it up the last few days of the month! Patience is a virtue, and so is being a good lobsterman! Sticking to my gut and leaving my traps to get thrashed around a little bit has paid off and my honey hole is thriving! “Safe and steady Eddy,” aka Ben, has kept his traps inside the whole time and keeps contributing more than his fair share to the overall number – ( I think he is actually better than 1/3 of the catch…shhhhh don’t tell him).
This week LDL Co. was happy to host another pair of Californians on the lobster excursion... Keith and Jeanne Gardner (parents of fellow potters Lindsey Caldwell, and in-laws of Tyler Caldwell)! Pretty sure - aside from Mainers - Californians have been the most frequented guests on the "Liza B" this year!!!! Prove me wrong!!!
Here are Jeanne comments!
"We were fortunate enough to go out lobstering twice when we were on Badgers island. Both times Will was hauling in the traps and William was his first mate. William loves helping pull in the traps, throwing the buoys back in the water, and banding the lobsters. But his favorite thing appeared to be playing with the bait fish. He smelled great when he got home to mom and baby Charlie! We had a great first outing hauling with 19 lobsters. The second outing we hauled in 16! Not bad at all. But the best was eating lobster dinners both nights!!! What a treat. What a great few days with the Banfields. Thank you for your amazing hospitality!" - Jeanne Gardner
Most of the lobsters have been soft shell since the fishing picked up, which makes for a little tastier treat – in my opinion! Sweeter, tenderer, and just so damn easy to shuck!
Yea yea yea Anne Banfield won the bet (the first of two this year) again. However over the past few days we blew right past her guess of 582 and started throwing more second guess potters overboard! Next year I think if the boat beats a guess by more than 20 or so it goes to fund a large lobster bake hosted by yours truly for all of you special people! Food for thought!
As promised LDL Co. Donated 10% ($285.00) to the Maine Lobsterman Association...Thanks to everyone who participated! $2 per guess went towards this great cause!
Check them out online if you want to see all the good things they do to try and protect the fishery and all the lobstermen at risk of losing jobs if in fact it is shut down!
With 12 days left in the 2020 LDL Pot Challenge we are hoping for a very strong finish to cap off a record breaking year! For you second guessers we averaged 35 a week for the month of September, but the fishing is going to get better!
Some of you have received a text from me/Liza over the last couple of days. I'll be shuttling coolers stuffed with lobsters to Rutland on Monday (tentatively)…deets to follow. Once that trip happens LDL Co. will have supplied lobsters to 74 out of 109 people (I subtracted dogs and babies) that took part in the Lobster Pot Challenge – which I feel is pretty damn good! That doesn’t include all the people who were not in the pot that got lucky and had a taste of our sweet ocean bugs! We also hit people who reside in 13 different states - California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Wisconsin. After Monday you can ask if we have any available, but Ben, Kate, Liza, and I are going to work on filling our freezers for the winter... I apologize in advance if the answer is NO!!!!
North vs South Update:
Heading into the final day of our little side thing, Team Truly had a lead of 154 – 136 ! LDL Co. made a huge comeback, but in the end the rookie team from up North edged these seasoned Capt's right out. No one fished today so the score stayed the same. Congrats fellas! We look forward to a more formal gig next year!
Spotlight Company:
Inland Seafood out of South Portland, ME.
Shout out to Scout Weurtherner who runs the Lobster division for Inland Seafood. All of the shucked lobster meat that we used at LD’s Lobster Shack came from Scout (we supplied the freshies, ain't got no time for shucking 10 pounds of meat every Sunday - plus my hands are soft now that I sit behind my computer every day - making huge deals)!
"As the largest seafood distributors, one of the leading packers of Maine lobster, and one of the most innovative companies in our industry, Inland Seafood has built its strong reputation over 35 years by providing quality products to our customers; products that are tailored to your needs."

The production team has filmed (Bubba Casella) and is currently being worked on editing (Chelsea Boucher) the year end video!!! Not sure it will top my spring into video, but it will certainly come close!!!
