Ahoy fellow potters!!
Capt’n Cole of the F/V Murphy’s Claw here, having grabbed the mic from the Duder (wait have we been missing all kinds of Big Lebowski references this whole time?!?!) and I’m here to radio in this week’s update.
We’ve had some minor difficulties in locating two of the five traps registered to the Claw, and by that I mean….they gone! We made what can only be described as a valiant effort to locate the missing pots by searching the fishing grounds several times at various tides, including at dead low and slack with the hopes that they were just set in too deep of water. Maybe we should have listened to our old salty neighbor Tony when he said “Christ, you need at least 100 feet of line”. Alas, the two pots are still MIA. Perhaps consigned to Davey Jones’ locker by a strong current and big tide, perhaps cut by an angry commercial fisherman who was mad about us “setting in his area” (although who could get mad at such a cutely painted pot???) or perhaps they were cut by some tourist looking to take home such an unique piece (again my pots paint job is certainly one of a kind). But with the grounds being as productive as they have been (My 3 traps putting up 9 keepers to Will and Liza’s 6/10) I have rigged two new 48’ traps and have them deployed, that’ll sure help boost those numbers.
Keep that radio dialed in to channel 6-9 on your ship to shore radios as there is some BIG F/V Murphy’s Claw developments in the works.
The Duder keeps trying to pin his poor numbers on his “little traps” and I have to keep reminding him its not the size of the trap but the way you shake your bait, or in reality LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!!!!!!
All he can stammer in response is “yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man”. Although in all fairness he might have a honey hole that will pay out nice dividends if his plan works.
As the water continues to warm, the bugs will continue to move, and the nice soft shell shedders should become more abundant, although some big hard shell holdovers still remain in our lobster car (not something you drive) that require additional force to crack open. Luckily I had Murphy to help supervise.
Quick side note to the warming waters: the Gulf of Maine is the fastest warming body of water on the planet and if it continues at its pace the LDL Pot Challenge could look VERY different in years to come or potentially be nonexistent as the lobsters continue to migrate north following the colder water. So do your part, recycle and make good choices when it comes to our planet. Think globally, act locally. (That just scored me UNTOLD brownie points with the wife!!!)
Anyway…last weeks count may have been a bit down with only 38 making it to the dock, putting us at 158 for the year, but with a good week of weather ahead, and a stinking barrel of bait, breaking 200 should be well within our sights. As the Duder says, strikes and gutters, ups and down man.
