Beer, Fireworks & Hangovers

July 7, 2019 at 10:20AM

Good Morning to all and Happy 4th of July weekend folks!

Hopefully you all drank too many beers (according to my sources, America spent over $1 billion!!!:0) and enjoyed the fireworks from a safe distance. Kenny needed ear plugs from across the river, but he made it through just fine...yes, we know.

I missed last week’s e-mail due to a trip back to VT for a memorial service (RIP Jan), and for a stone wall rebuild (W.J. Banfield & Assoc. real estate division for the win) and then bouncing back and forth between family lake houses. I just didn't have time to sit and write - but let me tell you, the content is flowing!

Last week was the first road trip of 2019 with a cooler full of these tasty little bottom scavengers of the sea. You can't get lobsters any fresher than directly from the Liza B. All these places claim that they were just caught and were on the boat that day blah blah blah. They all lie. I'll tell you a secret, Little Duder Lobster Co has the freshest of them all. Only handled twice; once from the trap, the second time to the cooler. All these other "commercial" guys handle them way more and who knows how many cooler trucks they get transported on. They say that if you handle a lobster too many times it really messes with their nervous system causing them to lose flavor and become a little tougher. Because I am your Captain, ours are always more tender!

A quick recap on the month of June! It was a little slow getting going as I expected it would be. As the water started to warm, the lobsters started to swim in. The traps were checked 6 times since we released them on June 8th, and our production was up 950% over last year’s numbers putting our total at 19 for the month. That is just a tremendous jump from last year proving that knowing where to put the traps really pays off!

Some of July 2018 numbers to get everyone on the same page. Total caught in July 2018 was 67 bugs, with only 4 coming in during the first week. As my fellow Captain’s say the softies are coming meaning the quantity is going to skyrocket! Neighbor Tony says he's in the business for "quantity, not quality" - but for you, were on the hunt for both! We had 1 soft shell in the trap the other day and a half-eaten claw, so we know the lobsters are on the move. Those mamas (yes, we catch mainly ladies) are out for themselves and the softer the shell the easier it is for them to eat one another!

July 2019 is off to a great start, we absolutely SLAMMMED them this week...hauling in more than all of June 2019 combined!!! Monday got us back on the board with 5!! Thursday we were accompanied by Sam Bres, aka Jake from State Farm (pictured below). His tasks included but were not limited to...baby watching, pulling a blow fish out of one of the traps, and fishing for bait. We ended up with 8 on the day after the 4th. Saturday's haul was our first double digit day bringing in 11 massive lobsters...putting this week’s total at 24!! We expected the number hauled in for this month to be off the charts, but not even I could predict this! We have caught a season total of 43, 37 lobsters ahead of last year to this point and it’s only going to get better!!!!!

Final Thought: Don't let Monday ruin your Sunday! And if you have the desire to reply to this or any email, please reply all so we flood Kenny Jr and Sr's inbox.

Until next time....

Your Captain, Duder
